IT ALL STARTED HERE

The McWethy family’s story begins in the early 1600s, when Robert Macwithy Macrory journeyed from Scotland’s Outer Hebrides to New York, with the family name eventually evolving to McWethy over generations. Their Illinois roots were established after the Civil War, when Henry Lyman McWethy and his brothers traveled to the Fox River Valley and founded McWethy Brothers Insurance in Aurora. His son Frank became a founding member of Aurora Country Club, passing down a legacy of business acumen and a love of golf to his grandson, Jim McWethy. Inspired by his Scottish heritage, Jim transformed Mistwood Golf Club into one of the nation’s premier links-style courses and created McWethy’s Tavern and the Great Hall as tributes to his roots. Today, his children, Gretchen and Todd, proudly carry forward this legacy blending family values, community connection, and a commitment to exceptional hospitality.
